USA BOYCOTTS BEIJING WINTER OLYMPICS 2022

Context:

According to the news published in NDTV newspaper on 07 Dec 2021, the US Government has announced the boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. The Olympics 2022 will be held in Beijing.

What reason has the USA given?

• The US cited that "China's human rights ATROCITIES" is the main reason for its boycott. The US has named the boycott "Diplomatic Boycott".

Diplomatic Boycott:

• It means that the US will not send any diplomatic representatives to participate in the Olympics. But the US will allow American athletes to participate in the Olympics.

The US is boycotting due to human rights atrocities of China:

• Situations in Tibet and Taiwan
• Attack on Hong Kong
• Harassment of the Uyghur Muslim Muslims of Xinjiang

Earlier Boycotts:

• Earlier, the US boycotted the Olympics in 1980. The strike then turned out to protest against the Soviet Union's presence in Afghanistan.
• In December 1979, Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan to support the Afghan Communist government.
• The Soviet Union then settled in Afghanistan until 1989.
• In 1980, about 60 countries refused to compete in the Olympics with the US. These include China, Japan, Canada, Israel, and West Germany.
