Uttarakhand first state to release report on conservation of endemic and threatened floras

The state of Uttarakhand has become the first one to publish a unique report underscoring the efforts to save over 1,100 rare plants from extinction.

Key Points:

  • The objective of the programme is germplasm conservation to conserve species even if they disappear from their natural habitat in the wild.
  • The conservation programme includes herbs like ‘Giloy’, ‘Chitrak’, ‘Kalmegh’ and ‘Ashwagandha’, which have been included in the research to find a possible cure to coronavirus by the scientists’, the programme has been implemented by whistleblower forest service officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi.
  • Around 1,145 plant species have been conserved and 46 species out of the total conserved are endemic to Uttarakhand and 68 species are rare, endangered or threatened, under the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • The report, which is one of the largest repositories of conserved plants, was released on 24 May 2020.
  • The programme encompasses all classes of plants, shrub, tree, bamboo, herb, fern, cycad, orchid, wild climbers, alpine flowers, palm, grass, cane, aquatic species, cactus, succulent, insectivorous plants and even lower plants like lichen, algae and moss, which have been documented, classified and conserved for the first time.
