UV sanitizing device 'SHUDDH' developed by IIT Kanpur

The Imagineering Laboratory Department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has developed the Smartphone operated Handy Ultraviolet Disinfection Helper (SHUDH), which is an Ultraviolet (UV) sanitizing product.

Key Points:

  • The use of the product by authorities can be used to alleviate the fear of masses related to the coronavirus pandemic in places where a large number of people visit.
  • The UV sanitizing product ‘SHUDH’ comprises six UV lights of 15 watts each which are monitored individually from a distance.
  • The device can be used to disinfect a 10x10 square feet room in about 15 minutes at its full operation.
  • The on and off operation and the location of the device can be controlled from a distance using one’s smartphone after the installation of an android application.
  •  The device can be of assistance in containing the spread of coronavirus in areas that are highly susceptible like hotels, malls, offices, schools and hospitals.

Note:

  • The Ultraviolet irradiation of germs and viruses is a process of disinfection which employs short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (ultraviolet C or UV-C) to inactivate or kill germs and viruses by tearing down the nucleic acid and exposing the DNA, which marks the germs incapable of performing vital cellular functions.
