Vishwanathanm Anand as WWF ambassador

Vishwanathan Anand has been named the new ambassador of World Wide Fund(WWF)of India for the environmental education programme.

  • The World Wide Fund is celebrating 50 years of conservation in India. The World Wide Fund(WWF) was set up as a charitable trust on 27 November 1969.
  • The organization changed its name from World Wildlife Fund to World Wide Fund in 1987.
  • The Environment Education Program was created in 1976 to reach out to school children and citizens throughout the nation and influences more than 50 lakh children across 2000 schools.
  • The organization aims to generate problem-solving, critical thinking and environmentally-conscious individuals.
  • The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is a Not For Profit Organization and was set up in 1961 with its headquarters in Rue Mauverney, Gland, Switzerland and works in the field of wilderness preservation, and reducing human effect on the environment.
  • The objective of WWF is to halt the decay of the earth's natural environment for a future where humans live in harmony with nature.
  • Viswanathan Anand has won the World Chess Championship five times in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. In 1985, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award for Outstanding Indian sportsperson in Chess.
  • In 1987, he conferred the Padma Shri, and he received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991-92. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 2000 and 2007 respectively.
