Vote on Reforms in the Russian constitution begin

The government of Russia has begun voting on constitutional reforms that would enable the current President of Russia Vladimir Putin to lead the country until 2036. The voting was initially scheduled to be held on 22 April 2020.

Key Points:

  • The voting was then rescheduled to 1 July 2020 amid the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic but was started on 25 June 2020. The step has been taken to avoid overcrowding and maintain social distancing during the referendum.
  • Under the referendum, around 110 million voters from Kaliningrad on the Baltic coast to Kamchatka on the pacific coast will vote.
  • The President of Russia announced the reforms to the 1993 Russian constitution in January 2020.
  • The current term of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, ends in 2024, he was elected to the office in May 2012.
  • According to the Russian Constitution, for a person to be elected to the office one has to be at least 35 years of age and a citizen of the Russian Federation and should have permanently resided in the country for 10 years.
  • According to the Russian Constitution, the current limit to the election of an individual to the post of President is set to two consecutive terms with each term being of six-year.
