Wastelands Atlas 2019

Wastelands Atlas 2019

Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Minister for Rural Development, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and Panchayati Raj released the Wastelands Atlas 2019. The Atlas aims to show the importance of the availability of a reliable database on the wastelands of the country.

Key Points:

  • This Atlas was prepared by the Department of Land Resources in collaboration with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
  • Previously, the Department of Space has published Wastelands Atlases of India in the year 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2011 editions.
  • The new wastelands mapping exercise using the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite data is the 5th edition of Wastelands Atlas 2019.

About Wastelands Atlas 2019:

  • The Wastelands Atlas 2019 provides district and state-wise distribution of different categories of wastelands area. This would include mapping of about 12.08 Mha (Million-hectare meter) so far, in the unmapped area of Jammu & Kashmir. The Atlas presents the changes in wastelands between 2008-09 and 2015-16.
  • India holds 2.4% of the total land area of the World and is supporting 18% of the World's population. The per capita availability of the agricultural land in India is 0.12 ha, and among the world countries, the per capita agriculture land is 0.29 ha. The pressure on the land beyond it carrying capacity results in the degradation of the lands in the country.
  • The robust geospatial information on wastelands assumes the importance of the land and helps effectively to roll back the wastelands for productive use through various land development programmes and schemes.
