West Bengal government to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia to empower girls 

The West Bengal government to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree colleges across the state to ’empower girls’. In the month of January Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had laid the emplacement stone of the new university at Krishnagar in Nadia district. 

The main objective of the scheme is 

  • To ensure that girl’s study in schools and delay their marriages until the age of 18 years.
  • The 'Kanyashree Prakalpa' wants to improve the status of those from socio-economically disadvantaged families through conditional cash transfers.
  • These are two transfer components of this one of them is an annual incentive of Rs 750 given to girls in the age group 13 to 18 years and another one for studying in Class 8 for every year till they are engaged in an academic provided they are unmarried at the time.
  • According to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the government has allowed a budget of Rs. 5600+ crores for the Kanyashree scheme.
  • Amount of Rs. 25,000 is also given to girls for one-time grant of the age of 18 years. 

Kanyashree scheme

  • Kanyashree scheme was started in 2011.
  • The Kanyashree Prakalpa has contemplated by Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal (DWD&SW).
  • The Kanyashree scheme of the state government has empowered more than 50 lakh girls in West Bengal.
  • In 2017 the United Nations for Public Service was awarded to Mamata Banerjee government for its Kanyashree scheme.
