WHO has declared Algeria and Argentina as malaria-free countries

World Health Organisation has declared Algeria and Argentina the latest countries to be recognised as malaria-free countries.

WHO satisfied the two countries as malaria-free countries after three years of recording no new cases. Algeria and Argentina having recorded no few cases joined others 36 countries around the world which have eliminated the mosquito-borne disease.

The country has now seen no new infections since 2013 and is the first nation in Africa to be declared malaria-free in more than 40 years. It is the only other African country to have eliminated the disease is Mauritius which achieved the goal in 1973.

According to records, World Health Organisation reports that mosquito bites kill about 435,000 people a year – in the last six decades.
