WHO’S FIRST REGIONAL STATUS REPORT ON DROWNING PREVENTION IN THE SOUTH-EAST ASIA AND WESTERN PACIFIC REGIONS

Context:

On 23rd July, WHO launched its 1st Regional Status Report on Drowning Prevention in the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions. According to the report around two-thirds of all global deaths due to drowning occur in the Asia Pacific region.

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • Drowning is the 3rd driving reason for unexpected injury and death worldwide and it represents 7% of all injury-related deaths.
  • This report expresses that Middle and low-income nations account for over 90% of all the unintentional drowning deaths in the world. Likewise, more than 50% of the world’s total drowning takes place in the Western Pacific and South-East Asia regions.
  • In 48 of the 85 nations which have information on drowning, it is among the top 5 causes of death for children who are under 15 years of age.
  • Drowning records for 75% of all deaths during flood disasters. Several countries in the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions are vulnerable to this type of disaster.
  • These reports give information on the status of water safety and drowning prevention in each of the regions.
  • In 2019, over 1,44,000 people had drowned in the Asia Pacific region which accounts for 61% of all global drowning deaths.
  • Around 70,000 and 74,000 deaths in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions respectively occurred because of drowning.
