WII to conduct Asiatic Lion Census

Around 8,000-10,000 cameras will be used to carry out the 2020 lion census in Gujarat, the last abode of the lion. Against 15,000 sq km area surveyed in the last census, now it will be counted across 25,000 sq km area spanning seven districts.

Key Points:

  • For the first time, the expertise of Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will be perused in the census. This is scheduled to take place in May 2020.
  • The WII had sent a proposal to the Gujarat government and two rounds of meetings have been held for finalizing the modalities of the census.
  • In 2015 lion census it had counted 523 lions in the state. The number is expected to have risen phenomenally with internal assessments of the forest department which indicates that the population may have crossed the 1,000-mark.

About Asiatic Lions:

  • Asiatic lions belong to the category of Pantherine cats.
  • The Asiatic Lions in Gujarat are restricted to Gir National Park in the state.
  • The lions are listed as “Endangered” in IUCN Red List.
  • In the initial stage, the lions were spread from the east of the Indus River to West Bengal and also to Narmada River in Central India.
