Wildlife census begins in Kalakkad-Mundanthurai tiger reserve

From February 17th Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is to conduct a five-day wildlife census. It organised an orientation programme at Papanasam on the 1st day of the programme to train the participants in collecting the data from the field.

Key Points:

  • A total of 230 persons out of which 30 students, 50 volunteers and 150 forest personnel will be involved in the exercise in small groups, each comprising five to seven members. 
  • The participants were trained at Papanasam on 21st January 2020 by Deputy Director of KMTR’s Ambasamudram Division R. Kanchana, who gave useful tips on wildlife census.
  • During this , the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve will conduct the annual tiger, co-predators and wild ungulates population survey.
  • To carry out this census in reserve comprising 30 beats and 7 forest ranges in Ambasamudram and Kalakad divisions, students, volunteers, and all the field staff which include foresters, forest guards, forest watchers and anti-poaching watchers would be engaged.
  • In this survey all beats will be covered for the presence of wild animals like leopards, tigers, wild boars, wild dogs and prey animals, including sambar, chital, wild boars, gaurs and elephants.
