World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

1st December of every year is observed as World AIDS Day. It provides an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in fighting against HIV. This also shows support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illness. This was founded in 1988; World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day.

The theme for 2019 is “Communities Make the Difference.”

Few Facts:

  • More than 101,600 people are living with HIV in a country like the UK. Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. Even though the virus was being identified early as 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.
  • As per the World Health Organisation, "37.9 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018, 79 per cent received testing, 62 per cent received treatment, and 53 per cent had achieved suppression of the HIV virus with reduced risk of infecting others."
  • Currently, there is various scientific advancement we have seen in the HIV treatment, and many laws to protect people who are living with HIV. People do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others. The discrimination and stigma remain a reality for many people who live with this.
  • This day is important because it reminds the government and public that HIV has still not gone away; there is a critical need to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
