World Athletics Day observed on 7 May

The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAI) organizes the World Athletics Day on 7 May every year. The day was first celebrated in the year 1996 and was started by the then President of IAAF Primo Nebiolo.

  • The day is utilized as a platform to raise awareness about sports and encourage the youth to take up sports as a career.
  • The first World Athletics Day was centered around the theme of the Centennial edition of the Olympic Games in Atlanta. In the event, two boys and girls were invited by the International Federation to attend the Atlanta Olympics and were selected from each continental area.
  • The IAAF, which organizes the events, was founded on 17 July 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden, as the global body governing the sport of track and field athletics and is now an association of more than 160 countries.
  • The IAAF is also called the World Athletics or International Association of Athletics Federation.
  • The aim of the World Athletics Day is to educate the people about the importance of sports, promote athletics as a primary sport in educational institutions and schools, and Construct a link between youth, sport, and environmental conservation.
  • Athletics in India is organized and managed by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) established in 1946, which is affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association and IAAF.
