World Bank approves Rs 11000 crore loan for Dam safety

The World Bank has accepted India’s demand for Rs. 11000 Cr loan for improved dam safety in India for next 10 years.

The loan has been approved for 733 large dams in India spread in 18 states.

The money will be utilized under on-going Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (DRIP).

Besides safety, maintenance and emergency plan actions, the DRIP will focus on revenue generation through tourism, fisheries and water recreation.

India has currently 5264 large operational dams but 80% of them are 25 years old and in need of maintenance and safety upgradation.
