WORLD BRAIN DAY

WORLD BRAIN DAY

Context:

Every year, on 22nd July, World Brain Day is observed. It is observed to raise awareness about the disease multiple sclerosis (MS).

The theme for the year 2021:

  • ‘Stop Multiple Sclerosis’.

Multiple sclerosis:

  • It is a disease that affects the brain and the spine.
  • It is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves.
  • Nerve damage distorts communication between the brain and the body.
  • According to the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), this disease affects more than 2.8 million people of all ages globally.

Symptoms:

  • Vision loss, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination.
  • The symptoms, duration and severity can vary from person to person.
  • Some people may be symptom-free for most of their lives, while others can have severe, chronic symptoms that never go away.

Prevention:

  • Physiotherapy and medication that suppress the immune system can aid with symptoms, and slow disease progression.

Types of MS and stages:

  • Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS): This is a single, 1st episode, with symptoms lasting around 24 hours.
  • Relapse-remitting MS (RRMS): Around 85% of people with MS are initially diagnosed with RRMS. RRMS includes new or increasing symptoms, followed by periods of remission, during which symptoms go away partially or totally.
  • Primary progressive MS (PPMS): Symptoms worsen gradually, without early relapses or remissions. Some people may experience times of stability.
  • Secondary progressive MS (SPMS): At first, people will experience relapse and remission, but then the disease will start to progress steadily.
