WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION - SOUTH-EAST ASIA REGIONAL OFFICE (WHO-SEARO)

Context:

On 07 September 2021, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare represented India at the World Health Organization- South-East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO) with a video conference. She offered intervention on behalf of India at the Ministerial Conference of the Seventy-fourth Session of the WHO Regional Committee, for South-East Asia.

Key Highlights of the Meeting:

• Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar discussed India’s challenges and opportunities during the COVID-19 Pandemic at the WHO SEARO Ministerial Roundtable.
• She highlighted the key measures and strategies designed to ‘build back better’ to achieve Universal Health Care and related Sustainable Development Goals and to strengthen the resilience of the health system for the future.
• She noted the courageous decisions of India's strong and decisive leadership as surveillance at entry points reduced the influx and spread of COVID-19 and provided ample time for the country to build public health capacity and infrastructure to effectively manage the epidemic.

WHO South-East Asia:

• It is one of the 6 WHO Regions.
• WHO South-East Asia is home to over a quarter of the world’s population.
• It aims at building a better, healthier future for the nearly 2 billion people in the Region, WHO is working with the 11 Member States to address persisting and emerging epidemiological and demographic challenges.
