WORLD LEPROSY DAY: JANUARY 30

Significance of the Day:

  • This international day is an opportunity to celebrate people who have had leprosy, raise awareness about the disease, and promote the elimination of stigma and discrimination associated with leprosy.

About the Day:

  • January 30 is also the day of Mahatma Gandhi's martyrdom which is why French humanitarian Raoul Follereau chose this date as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi, who was deeply involved in the cause of leprosy.

Leprosy:

  • It is an infectious disease that affects the skin, nerves, etc. 
  • This disease can cause parts of the body to fall off.

National Leprosy Eradication Programme:

  • It is a government-funded programme with a vision of “Leprosy-free India”. 
  • Under this programme action is taken for:
  • early detection of leprosy, 
  • complete treatment of detected cases. 
  • Other programs include leprosy awareness campaigns and Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Services such as the provision of Microcellular Rubber shoes, Aids & Appliances and self-care services.
  • Under this program, Reconstructive Surgeries are performed. And financial assistance is given to each patient undergoing Reconstructive Surgeries.
