World Pneumonia Day

World Pneumonia Day is observed on 12 November to make people aware of the pneumonia disease, its causes, symptoms and treatment. Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of deaths in children under the age of five despite this being preventable and treatable diseases.

The theme for 2019 is: “Healthy Lungs for all”

Key Points:

  • This day was established in the year 2009 by the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia.
  • Pneumonia was killing approximately 1.2 million children each year when the first World Pneumonia Day was launched.
  • UNICEF and WHO in 2013 released the Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea.
  • The International Vaccine Access Centre released the first pneumonia and Diarrhoea Progress Report in 2013.

Pneumonia is an infectious disease that causes infection in one or both lungs. It can be serious and life-threatening. Due to an infection, inflammation is caused in the air sacs of lungs known as alveoli.
