World Soil Day

World Soil Day

World Soil Day was endorsed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the year 2013. It was officially adopted through a resolution at the 68th UN General Assembly. The World Soil Day is observed annually on December 5 all over the world.

Theme: Stop Soil Erosion, Save our Future

The theme focuses on the increasing challenges in soil management and raises the profile of healthy soil by encouraging organisations, governments, communities, and individuals around the world to work towards improving the soil health and its conservation.

Key Points:

  • Every 5 seconds around one field of soil is eroded.
  • It is an alarming state, and we have to increase awareness regarding the importance of soil and its conservation.
  • World Soil Day also highlights the growing issue due to population expansion.
  • Therefore, it is necessary to take a step to reduce the erosion of soil, to maintain fertility so that food safety could be ensured.

What is soil erosion?

In this process, the soil particles are generally loosened or washed away in the valleys, rivers, oceans, streams or any faraway lands. This has worsened due to human activities like deforestation and agriculture.

It is a continuous process that occurs either slowly or at an alarming rate. It results in a continuous loss of topsoil, ecological degradation, soil collapse, etc.

Soil Conservation and its methods:

  •  Soil conversation is the method of preserving soil. There are several reasons for the loss in soil fertility, including over-use, erosion, salinisation and chemical contamination. Soil erosion is when topsoil is removed, which is important for nutrients, micro-organisms that are necessary for plant growth and its shine. Soil conservation is one such step that protects the soil from being washed away. There are various ways to conserve the soil like Contour Ploughing, Terrace farming, Windbreaks, Crop Rotation, Agrostological Measures, No-till farming, Green Manures, Salinity Management and Earthworms.
