World Theatre Day observed on 27 March

The World Theatre Day is observed on 27 March every year and enables the theatre communities to promote their work on a large scale which will help them get their due recognition and make the world know about the various art forms that exist.

Key Points:

  • The World Theatre Day was started in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI)and is celebrated across the world by ITI centres and International Theatre Communities.
  • ITI was established in 1948 and was started by the first Director-General of UNESCO, Sir Julian Huxley, and the playwright and novelist JB Priestly.
  • The objective of ITI is to build and promote education, arts and culture, and focus its attempts on enhancing the status of all members of the performing arts professions. 
  • Jean Cocteau of France wrote the first World Theatre Day International Message in 1962.
  • ITI has more than 90 Centres across the world.
