World Turtle Day observed on 23 May

World Turtle Day is observed every year on 23 May to raise awareness regarding tortoises and turtles. The day is utilized as a platform to generate awareness regarding the measures to be taken to help the turtles survive and thrive in the natural environment without interruptions by humans.

Key Points:

• The day was started by the American Tortoise Rescue which was founded in 1990. The non-profit organization is the founding sponsor of World Turtle Day, which was invented by Miss E. Russell.
• The trademark of the term "WORLD TURTLE DAY" has been done by Susan Tellem of Malibu, California.
• The day has been created for the annual observation to help people in the celebration and protection of turtles and tortoises and their habitats across the globe.
• Sea Turtles are also known as Marine Turtles and are endangered and less than a million are left in the world.
• There are seven existing species of Sea Turtles which include Loggerhead, Green, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley, Hawksbill, Leatherback and Flatback.
• The difference between a turtle and tortoise is that tortoises are exclusively land creatures and live in habitats ranging from deserts to wet tropical forests, while turtles live under water as well as on land.
