World Youth Skills Day observed on 15 July

The World Youth Skills Day is observed on 15 July every year. The day was designated by the United Nations in December 2014, with the aim of achieving better social and economic conditions for the youth through the resolution of challenges of underemployment and unemployment.

Key Points:

  • The theme for World Youth Skills Day 2020 is “Skills for a Resilient Youth”.
  • The day offers the young individuals, public and private sector stakeholders, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutes, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the necessity of skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and decent work to the young individuals.
  • The day is being celebrated virtually in 2020 on account of the Coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the world.
  • The current outbreak has affected around 70 percent of the world’s learners due to the closure of schools and universities.
  • According to the United Nations:
  1. one in five young people are NEET: Not in Employment, Education or Training across the globe and three out of the four young NEETs are women,
  2. one out of six people are out of work due to the pandemic in the current scenario,
  3. Between 1997 and 2017, the population of youth increased by 139 million, but the labour force comprising the young population reduced by 58.7 million.
  • Providing education and training are the primary goals to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the TVET programme can provide individuals with skills and knowledge that are necessary to get employed.
