Selection Process

SBI Clerk Selection Procedure:

In order to get selected in State Bank Of India as a Junior Associate, you have to cross two hurdles viz.
1. Preliminary Exam
2. Mains Exam

After crossing both the hurdles, SBI will conduct a small test called Language Proficiency Test (LPT). Once you are through, then SBI will call you for Document Verification.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for SBI Clerk 2018 Examination has been clearly specified in the Exam Notification published by State Bank of India recently. Each SBI aspirant must go through all the important details regarding SBI Eligibility Criteria before applying online. SBI Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2018 consists of a set of requirements and clauses in terms of age, educational qualification and nationality.

Age Limit

According to the dictates of SBI Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2018, the age limit has been set for 20 to 28 years as on 1 January 2018. Hence, candidates must have been born not earlier than 2 January 1990 and not later than 1 January 1998 (both days inclusive).

The relaxation in the upper age limit has been applied according to government norms. They are as follows

  • SC/ ST: 5 Years
  • OBC: 3 Years
  • PH: 10 Years
  • PH + OBC: 13 Years
  • PH + SC/ST: 15 Years
  • J&K Domicile: 5 Years
  • Ex-Servicemen: Actual period of service rendered in defence services + 3 Years
  • Widows, Divorced Women Judicially Separated: 9 Years


All SBI Aspirants must fall within the proper age limit. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of SBI Clerk Application Form.

Educational Qualification

Some highlights of the changes made in the exam pattern are given below:

  • Each section of the Prelims exam will now have a separate time slot (20 Minutes each).
  • Also, there will not be any sectional or overall cut-off.
  • An adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by the Bank (83010 candidates) will be shortlisted for the Mains Exam from the list of all candidates arranged in descending order of aggregate marks scored.

Job Profile

There main objective/ job role of an SBI Clerk is to guide and assist customers, civilians and probable clients through the various banking processes. They need to highly trained and confident to answer each and every query put forward. The various set of tasks assigned are as follows

Pay scale

Following is the pay scale for Clerical Cadre.

To elaborate on this Pay Scale further

Rs. 11,765 is the Basic Pay
Rs. 655 shows the fixed increment and is consecutive for 3 years annually that cumulates the basic to 13730 and scales up the designation as well
The Pay Scale can be analysed in this manner. The Perks and Allowances are as follows. 

  • Dearness Allowance (39.4% of Basic)
  • HRA depending upon the City (7-9% of the Basic)
  • Special Allowance (7.5% for Clerks)
  • The Pay Band for both the SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk is the same and usually rounds up to Rs. 18,100 – 19,800 per month.

But SBI offers an additional allowance to its employee that gives an amount of Rs 2000/- extra benefit that enhances the salary to approx Rs. 20,100 – 21,800. 

Another difference in salary is in the timely increment of in-hand salary, which can scale upto Rs. 50,000 per month approximately in case of most Public Sector Banks under IBPS and Rs. 54,000 – 55,000 per month in case of SBI Clerk working in the State Bank of India.

There is negative marking of ¼ marks for every wrong answer

Q. What is the percentage criteria to apply for SBI Clerk 2018 Exam?

There is no definite percentage criteria to be eligible for this exam. A candidate who is graduate with any percentage can apply for the SBI Clerk 2018 examination.

Q. Do I need to clear both SBI clerk prelims and mains to qualify for interview round?

Yes, it is mandatory for the candidates to meet SBI clerk cut-off criteria of both the exams. However, SBI clerk prelim score is not taken into consideration for the final selection.

Q.  I have made a few errors in submitting my application form, can I modify it?

It is not possible to modify an application, but you can resubmit a new application with the correct information.

Q.  What is the Application fee for SBI Clerk Exam 2018?

The application fee for ST/SC/PWD candidates will be Rs. 100 and for all others it will be Rs. 600
